A New Favorite

It's funny how we change in so many ways as we get older. People often say, "I used to not like that as a kid, but now I love it". Usually they are referring to some kind of 'yucky' food.

As a little girl I can remember not liking one particular hymn in church. I think it was the melody that made me dislike it so much. It sounded sad to me...dragging along with each verse. I felt like it was lulling the whole congregation to sleep. I knew the people who would always request to sing it, and {inwardly} sighed when someone would ask us to turn to it in the hymnal. Oh how things change....

This hymn has been on my heart and on my tongue in a deeper way for about a year or so. I have found out that the writer was a young girl from Sweden. She enjoyed writing and in fact wrote over 600 hymns! She wrote of her Lord and Savior out of a deep love for Him and His precious Word. She experienced a tragedy I cannot imagine, in watching her father drown before her very eyes. She truly knew that our Heavenly Father upholds us, strengthens us and leads us each and every day of our lives.

What's the hymn? Oh, you haven't guessed it yet? :) the beautiful hymn is "Day by Day". All these years later, I have grown to love the hymn and favor it above almost every other. I can claim the words as Lina Sandell Berg did. My Lord sustains me daily- no matter what trial I may face.

I thought I'd share my new favorite song with you today.....

Day by day, and with each passing moment,
Strength I find, to meet my trials here;
Trusting in my Father’s wise bestowment,
I’ve no cause for worry or for fear.
He Whose heart is kind beyond all measure
Gives unto each day what He deems best—
Lovingly, its part of pain and pleasure,
Mingling toil with peace and rest.

Every day, the Lord Himself is near me
With a special mercy for each hour;
All my cares He fain would bear, and cheer me,
He Whose Name is Counselor and Power;
The protection of His child and treasure
Is a charge that on Himself He laid;
This the pledge to me He made.

Help me then in every tribulation
So to trust Thy promises, O Lord,
That I lose not faith’s sweet consolation
Offered me within Thy holy Word.
Help me, Lord, when toil and trouble meeting,
Ever to take, as from a father’s hand,
One by one, the days, the moments fleeting,
Till I reach the promised land.

Deuteronomy 33:25b "As thy days, so shall thy strength be..."

I remember when someone would pick that hymn you would sigh....but it does have beautiful words, with such meaning! I am happy, it's one of your new favorites!:)

I didn't guess the hymn, but I do remember people who would consistently pick it!!! You should lift those people up in prayer when you sing it now. :)Funny how something we disliked so much can become precious after a time. (Sue)
